Dental Care Services for Pets

Practicing good dental hygiene with your pet protects them from pain and discomfort. Gum disease is the number one illness that veterinarians see in cats and dogs. When your pet has gum disease, this can affect their liver, kidneys and even heart. To avoid the aches, discomfort and unnecessary expenses, our team can create a dental care routine specifically tailored for your pet.

What happens when my pet’s dental health is neglected?

Your pet may develop what is called periodontal disease. This develops when saliva mixes with bacteria and forms a thin film on their teeth known as plaque. When you don’t brush their teeth the plaque multiplies and hardens forming tartar. To fight off the tartar, enzymes are released that break down gum tissue. This is when you begin to see signs of the disease like:

  • Bad breath
  • Excessive drooling
  • Bleeding, red or swollen gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Chewing on one side
  • Sneezing with nasal discharge
  • Yellow or brown buildup on their teeth

What should be included in my pet’s dental care?

  1. Frequent dental cleanings, at least once each year. During our professional cleanings we can perform checkups, X-rays and surgical extractions if needed. A complete dental cleaning will remove tartar and prevent or manage periodontal disease. To schedule a dental cleaning for your pet, call 905-576-3344 and one of our client care specialists would be happy to help.
  2. Brush their teeth daily. This will be difficult in the beginning but when you make it a part of their routine it gets easier. There are different flavours of pet toothpaste and special pet toothbrushes that are safe to use. Brushing their teeth regularly helps prevent plaque buildup.
  3. Provide safe chew toys. Avoid toys like tennis balls, cow hooves and real bones as they are too hard and can damage their teeth.
  4. Give your pet snacks or treats that clean their teeth. Our veterinarians can recommend brands that are tasty and good for your pet’s teeth.
