Ultrasound and X-ray

Ultrasounds and X-rays are important diagnostic tools that give us clear images of the internal organs and structures of your pet. Ultrasound uses sound waves that echo and bounce off internal structures to create images. During X-rays, light rays pass through the body and a snapshot is taken. For both procedures the images that are shown need a trained professional to interpret them.

Will my pet be sedated during an ultrasound or X-ray?

It depends on your pet. For X-rays we need your pets to remain still for the scans, if they are anxious or nervous we may sedate them.

What are ultrasounds and X-rays used for?

Radiology or X-rays can be used to detect conditions and determine treatment plans. X-rays are used to identify: arthritis, spinal cord disease, gallstones, fractures, bone tumours, periodontal disease and foreign objects.

Ultrasounds can examine soft-tissue inside your pet. Ultrasounds can evaluate important organs like the heart, kidneys, liver and bladder. They can also detect and monitor pregnancies.

Does my pet feel pain during an ultrasound or X-ray?

No. Both procedures are pain-free. The only discomfort your pet may experience is from the gel during ultrasound but it’s over within a few minutes.
